We all read a lot of royal dynasties, the valour of kings and hear stories about then as we grow up. And we get into a fantasy world when we read or hear about them, and sometimes we make them our heroes and follow them unconsciously. So I did this time, I do know about cholas and how great they are. The architectural marvel of the Tanjore brihadeeshwara temple and the alms and culture they grew. But whatever I read is after the cholas became a royalty and powerful. When I saw this movie "Ponniyin Selvan" I am amazed that what went behind this dynasty before it became so powerful which was something not many people would strive to know or know about despite books speaking about it. This movie talks about the plot to overturn the existing kingdom and wipe out the dynasty of the cholas before the cholas become so powerful with the rule of arulmozhi varman who becomes the so-called chola the great (raja raja chola). This is an epic for all the tamil culture people in the world. The movie has done its justice keeping the essence of the book which is what the adaptation is based upon. And the culture of the Tamils even when the Christian era was still to be born. The movie scored along with the background music keep you on the edge of the seat if you are well versed with tamil language and culture. Others may or may not find it boring, depending upon their interest in history. It shows the women power how two women one strives to bring down the kingdom while the other strives to uphold the kingdom is really commendable and the ladies who carried this character upheld its stage. And what a beauty to watch Aishwarya Rai in the big screen - she still got the glitering eyes and the expression when the prince king slays her husband who is the rival king against which the cholas win a battle. If you are a Tamil, this is one movie you must not miss. If you are not, it is still a great story to watch, just the way we see about Alexander or Napolean or any other great kings rules over the western world. Personally, I have watched this 4 times so far and still i am insatiable of its punch. I went to see the movie and I saw the movie, but the Great King Chola won over me here. Great work.
