Been a while, okay so I registered myself for a course on cloud computing and the first thing it required me to do is to get the Linux distribution installed. And as you all know, Ubuntu is much easier distribution of Linux and I planned to use it for the course. I used to have a PC back then with Linux loaded and then I sort of moved to Cygwin on windows at another time, then went to VM machines so I always wondered why MS Windows do not provide that part of Windows. Voila, with the Windows 2020 update finally here it is and all you have to do is to enable it.
Enabling Ubuntu WSL on Windows 10 (Post 2020H2 Update)
- Press Windows Key + R and you will see the Run window, in the Run window type, "Optionalfeatures.exe"
- You will see this
- Click the check box for "Enable Subsystem for Linux" and then restart after it activates the package
- Post restart, visit Microsoft store from the Windows terminal (Hope you know this)
- Search "Ubuntu", and choose the Ubuntu app that suits you. There may be more than one, but one should do as long as it gives the Ubuntu terminal. Mine was this
- Install and after installation click Launch
- The Ubuntu terminal will launch and will start installation and ask you to wait for few mins
- Post the installation, it will ask for a user name and password and will show a prompt. Mine was this
- That is all you need. enter any basic Linux command and you are set.
- Welcome to Linux on Windows. Have fun.
